What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?

Water you cannot switch off

A burst line under the floor or inside a wall runs until the mains tap is closed, and the damage climbs by the minute.

A sewer coming up inside

When the toilet gurgles and the shower floor starts filling, the main is blocked and the household is out of action.

Every tap running cold

In the post-war stock near Oaklands Street and Margot Avenue, tanks and pipework from the original build give out with no warning, and a cold shower in a Hunter winter is not a wait-until-Monday problem.

Stormwater surging out of floor wastes

An east-coast-low downpour can push the street's pits past their limit, and the water has to go somewhere.

Not sure it counts? Ring anyway and tell us what the water is doing. A quick call about a worn washer beats a burst under the floor left running until morning.

First Moves on a Burst Pipe

The first five minutes decide how much gets ruined, so work through these in order:

  1. 01

    Kill the mains

The stop tap usually lives at the front boundary under a plastic lid. Turn it fully clockwise.

  2. 02

    Drain the pressure

Open a tap at the lowest point, often a laundry tub or an outside tap, and let the pipes empty.

  3. 03

    Move what water will touch

Rugs, boxes, anything electrical off the wet floor.

  4. 04

Switch the power off if water reaches an outlet or appliance

And leave it off until the job is done.

Then ring (02) 4063 3469 and describe what you have shut off. Knowing the mains is already closed saves time on arrival, and the repair itself is usually quicker than the clean-up would have been.

What Changes the Price of an After-Hours Call?

The figure you hear is built from four things:

  • The hour Night, weekend and public-holiday work runs on a separate rate, stated before the job is locked in.
  • Pipe material A galvanised line from the 1950s behaves differently to PVC, and a repair on old steel takes longer than a swap on modern pipe.
  • Access Under the house, inside a wall or out in the open yard each change the time the job needs.
  • Parts on the van Standard fittings are carried, and anything that has to be ordered in is quoted first.

Nothing starts until you have heard the full figure and said go ahead.

What the Night Calls Look Like

The old steel gives out

The post-war fibro and weatherboard stock was plumbed in galvanised steel, and after that many decades it rusts thin from the inside. A line that held all summer can let go on a cold June night, and the burst rarely announces itself with a drip first.

Roots block mains after dark

The established streets carry mature trees whose roots have spent years finding the cracked joints in clay sewer lines. A household can run fine for months, then the main chokes on a Sunday and every fixture in the house backs up at once.

Storms flip the whole suburb to emergency mode

Glendale sits on the floodplain of Upper Cockle Creek, so in a heavy coastal-low downpour, the pits overflow and floor wastes run backwards. If water is rising at a floor waste, lift what you can and ring before it reaches the carpet.

Booking an After-Hours Job

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 3469 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

The fault gets stopped, then fixed

The mains is closed or the line cleared first to halt the damage, and the repair follows on that visit wherever parts allow.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Where the Other Jobs Sit

Not every urgent call is a burst pipe, and the right page depends on the fault:

Plumber feeding a drain camera into a pit at a commercial unit

Blocked drains

Sewers and stormwater lines that need clearing and a camera check afterwards.

Plumber finishing a continuous-flow gas hot water install

Hot water

Repairs and replacements when the whole house runs cold, with a loaner tank available.

Gas fitter at work on a kitchen oven

Gas leaks

A leak between the meter and your appliances, found and repaired.

Drain camera monitor showing the inside of a pipe

Water leak detection

Hidden leaks traced under slabs and inside walls.

Tree roots exposed around a pipe in a trench

Tree root removal

The long-term fix when roots keep re-choking the same line.

What Customers Say

I commend them for their very fast and efficient service when we had a burst pipe.

When We're Not the Right Call

A break in the public main belongs to the water authority, and we help you report it before we leave. Anything at the switchboard goes to an electrician. If you can smell gas, the gas network's emergency line comes first, before anyone touches a switch.

Emergency Plumbing Questions, Answered

Do you come out after midnight and on public holidays?

Yes. We are Available 24/7, public holidays included, and after-hours jobs are priced before anything is done. Night, weekend and holiday work carries a different rate, stated plainly at booking.

Should I turn the water off at the meter before you arrive?

Yes, if water is pouring through the house. The shut-off tap is normally at the property boundary, under a small plastic or concrete lid. Turn it clockwise to the stop, then open an outside tap to empty the pipes.

Can you clear a sewer that backs up at 2am in Glendale?

Yes. Old clay sewer lines under the established streets here choke on roots at any hour, and the jetter and camera work at night the same as in daylight. A camera pass once it is running shows the line is genuinely clear.

Is a gas smell a plumbing emergency I call you about?

Ring the gas network's emergency line first, from outside the house, and do not touch switches or anything electrical. Once the supply is safe, our gas fitter finds and repairs the leak on your side of the meter.
